1. What is the most significant accomplishment in looking at your Midterm or
Final? You can talk about technique in Photoshop, investigating your Big
Idea, creating a meaningful artwork, etc.
The most significant accomplishment  in my midterm was using quick masks. Instead of using a mask to mask out an entire portion of an image in my work, I was able to explore the easiness and speed of using a mask to select a certain part of an image. I then inverse selected the quick masked portion in order to give it color in a a black and white background. specifically, on the left side of my diptych, I quick masked my lips and feathered the area around it to give my lips a "burst" color as the cup touched my lips. I also used this technique to bring back the color that was previously changed to black and white.

Another important accomplishment that really helped me grow in producing artwork was gathering my own photos to use in my projects. I worked especially hard for my final to collect all of the material for my final diptych. I spent time with my friend to use him as the main subject in part of my final project which also helped me develop a better sense of knowledge in photography. Although I did not know much more, I learned a little bit more on the concept of focus on an object when taking pictures and how important certain focal points and perspective were to my project. For example, in my final project, the images of my friend were focused the hearts in the picture and how they fit in with his hands and feet. When collecting the sources, I thought of different perspectives of where the hearts should be to give more interest instead of just focusing on the face.

2. Choose a project in the class and discuss your most challenging learning
experience in Photoshop. Focus on a technique or concept from
Photoshop that was difficult at first, but that you mastered by the end of
the quarter

My most challenging learning experience in Photoshop was learning how to use masks. Adjustment masks were proved to be very useful for altering certain parts of an image while keep the rest of the image unaffected. I was amazed by the ability of the mask to turn on and off and show that it only changed the image when you wanted it to. It was hard for me to at first grasp the concept of what it was supposed to do, because I often would work on altering the mask but was confused by the lack of change. This was because I often was on the wrong layer, or was changing the image that the mask was covering. I got a better understanding of the way masks work when I discovered the use of quick masking in my midterm project to change color on a certain part of the image. I found that instead of creating a new layer for the mask, I could easily use the painting method to change a small part of the image without affecting the rest of the picture. With regular masks, my quiz three was a good example of learning how to use a mask to change the background that I was in. The self portrait I was retouching had the background of my study room, and I used a mask to edit only my face, unaffecting the background, and then placed myself on a beach background with the mask. The beach bg masked the background of my study room.

3. Compare two projects from the quarter to compare and contrast how you
achieved making meaning in the work. Try to showcase in your examples
an improved capacity to making visual images that mean something as
opposed to being a showcase of technique.

In quiz four, I attempted to bring a completely different meaning to the movie poster for "The Princess Bride".  The target audience was originally intended for adolescents to be interested in the movie. The movie poster showed a young boy listening to his grandfather tell him a bedtime story with a fairytale type background. Toys, coloring, and the relationship between the young male and the older male were all visual cues to bring meaning to the movie. To change the meaning, I incorporated several images of the couple that the story was focused on. The faces and figures that I placed on the poster were serious-faced images and also very romantic images. I wanted to bring a different meaning to what the movie was about, and focus on the love story part of the movie instead of the adolescent view of simple storytelling. Instead of centering my thoughts on advancing my photoshop techniques, I attempted to think of the best ways in which I could bring new images to the poster. I thought it would be best to achieve a simple meaning of love in the poster through clean cutting of images into the document. Opacity was also used to bring a subtle serious feeling because of the facial expressions of the actor/actress.

In my final, I portrayed love and its purpose in a different way, but also through simplicity. Instead of incorporating several new images into my work, I changed the meaning of an ordinary couple picture through the use of lighting. the original picture was altered so that the brightness of the picture was significantly lower than a "normal" picture. By overlaying this picture over the original, brightened photo, I was able to show the light underneath through erasing carefully with several opacities. The glow that the hearts created on my parents illustrated the light in their life as a result of their love. Through simple retouching and clone stamping, I was able to provide a straightforward, clean focus on my parents and their love. The light shining on their smiling faces and hands displays the symbolisms of happiness and commitment. Although the technique was not very complicated, the contrast between light and dark signifies deep meaning between true love and darkness without it.

I explored the concept of purpose through themes of love, relationships, and commitment and how they contrast with dispensable love. In my project, I wanted to portray what it would look like for a heart to fulfill its purpose. I believe a heart fulfills its purpose when it loves another sacrificially for a lifetime. We can see this through the concept of marriage and its necessary commitment. Love, in a sacrificial way, lights up our lives in so many ways. We are able to experience joy, laughter, trust, and satisfaction. To communicate the meaning of love and its purpose, my visual strategy was lighting. I wanted to illuminate the image of my parents from their hearts because they are, in my opinion, fulfilling their hearts' purpose to love. The glowing of their faces and bodies in the midst of a shadowy-like background illustrates that fulfilling this purpose lights up their life. The smiles on their faces show us joy, and the holding of each others hands shows us commitment.

On the flip side, I wanted to illustrate what it looks like to go the opposite path of what a heart's created purpose is. I explored what it may look like if love from our heart was suddenly disposable. When we view love as something very temporary and insignificant, we tend to "throw it away" easily. Originally, I went through a process in trying to demonstrate a "typical" dispensable item, such as a drink in a vending machine. My friend and I taped hearts to the drinks in a vending machine to symbolize that there are plenty hearts, and that you are free for the picking-yet also free for the throwing away after your are finished. I wanted to place this image into the other side of my diptych, however, decided against it because I found it extremely cheesy! Instead, my visual strategy was to use color (and lack of) to show the differences between a dark world with dispensable love versus a colorful and glowing image. The black and white background contrasts with the color in the opposing image to show that his life is not lit up by a committed love, but instead greyed because of temporary, disposable love. Several frames were used to display instability, whereas the other image shows just one focus to display stability.

As I was researching artists for my project, I came across Martin Grohs' mixed media projects and found that a lot of his work involved lighting. Most of his work includes a central focus of a person that seemingly normal/average, but his effects on the clothing that they wear or accessories on their face make them seem out of this world. His work influenced me because of the lighting he used and how it makes eyes wander across the work. Even if the image may be centrally focused on one person, I like that I want to look at the several different effects due to liquifying techniques or lighting and shadowing. I mimicked his ideas through the use of glowing, and creating several frames within one document to keep the eye wandering. Joonas Paloheimo was an inspiration in my work because of the contrasting between light and dark. In both images in my final project, I showed contrast between light and dark to show what the purpose of love does for us in our lives. Paloheimo also used very "clean", sharp, and focused imagery which I admired because simplicity is preferable to me. I incorporated this idea into the picture of my parents, which is just one focused shot on them to illustrate the stability in their relationship. I also incorporated this focus into the multiple images on the left side of my diptych in which each image centered on one thing.

1.       I decided to continue with the big idea of purpose. I explored this through the themes of love, relationships, and commitment versus dispensable love, and temporariness. I wanted to portray in my diptych final what it would look like for a heart to fulfill its purpose. I believe a heart fulfills its purpose when it loves another sacrificially for a lifetime. We can see this through the concept of marriage and its necessary commitment. When our hearts follow this purpose, it lights up our lives in so many ways. We are able to experience joy, laughter, trust, and satisfaction. On the flip side of my diptych, I wanted to illustrate what it looks like to go the opposite path of what a heart's created purpose is. I explored what it may look like if love from our heart was suddenly disposable. When we view love as something very temporary and insignificant, we tend to "throw it away" easily.
To communicate the opposing meanings of purpose and love, my visual strategy for one side of my diptych was lighting. I wanted to illuminate the image of my parents from their hearts because they are, in my opinion, fulfilling their hearts purpose to love. The lighting of their faces in the shadowiness of the background shows that fulfilling this purpose lights up their life, and the smiles on their face show us joy.  The other side of the diptych also uses lighting and color to illustrate purpose, but with a darker light to show what is missing in the "disposable" love. The use of grey and a dim glow shows the darkness that comes with choosing not to love with commitment to one person.
The work that I completed may be used to create a picture for people who are reading an article about eros vs. agape love in an informational magazine. Eros love depicts a selfish love that is focused on sexual desire as compared to agape love which dictionary.reference.com defines as "unselfish love of one person for another without sexual implications; brotherly love."

2. I'm not a huge fan of mainstream pop music, however, when I came across the music video for Christina Perri's "Jar of Hearts", I was really intrigued by the use of digital media in her video. I really like the way the falling hearts in the video really bring the lyrics to life. Although it creates artificiality for me, I appreciate the direct link to her lyrics. My project will connect to this video through the theme of love and its purpose.

Martin Grohs work also inspires me because of his use of mixed media. He illustrates simple body poses through his photography and makes it surreal through his themes of supernaturality.
This woman in this picture seems normal at first, but looking closer, Grohs has given us the sense that she is from another world because she can "fly". The lighting is what i noticed because he accentuates her features well through the lighting (muscles highlighted). She appears like she is glowing.

Joonas Paloheimo sparks an interest for me because of the major contrasts in color of this work. In the picture the man pulling her is dressed in dark colors whereas the rest of the picture is neutral and the colors of the woman's ensemble is white/neutral. A lot of artists use colors for symbolism.
In this image the darkness of the male is pulling towards him the image of light and "purity". The contrast is inspiring for my project because I'm showing the contrast between the purpose of a heart and what its not meant to do.

3. In my final project, I want to incorporate lighting into my project. Often times I run into problems where I'm creating a document in photoshop in which I paste a picture into the document and the lighting does not match the background picture at all. I found a tutorial that I will use as a guide to aid me in my project. Specifically in the picture with my parents, I will incorporate lighting to make their faces glow. The original picture of my parents is a darker lighting, and the heart that I will put in to the picture will be very bright. I want to create the effect that the heart is glowing and lighting up the area around it.

Here is the example that I'm looking to for reference:

The elephant looks out of place because the lighting doesn't match. The artist creates duplicated layers and erases away appropriately so that the elephant looks like it should be there.

The second example is also from worth1000.com but more simple:

The Princess Bride is a movie designed for a younger audience. Adolescents aging from 8-12 is the target audience which we can gather from the visual cues in the image such as the skateboard, baseball, and teddy bear. Based off of the main imagery in which the grandfather is telling his grandson a story, we can also conclude that younger kids are more likely to be attracted to this poster because it is a common action given to kids by grandparents around this age. The color of the movie poster is very rich with the dark blue sky which gives us a friendly vibe from the movie. The clouds in the background with the small castle show a stereotypical fairytale story. The color scheme is reminiscent of an animated movie, which is also mainly viewed by adolescents.  As compared to the James Bond film in which the colors seem harsh and pale.

Casino Royale is a more modern movie geared toward a young adult male audience. The color contrasts from the friendly blues of the Princess Bride poster, here showing a pale, icy-like blue color scheme. The young woman on the right hand side is noticeably smaller in size from the main character which may assume male dominance which is seemingly prominent in our culture today. She is a slim, pretty, sexy woman staring at Bond. She is alluring to all men, however, especially to younger men because of her age. The main character, Bond, is in a tuxedo holding gun in his left hand. Teenage boys and young adult men are more interested in gun-action or violence more than other audiences. This movie poster conveys the message that men are powerful with guns and can also draw in women.

Here is the final product. The audience is now geared more towards young to middle aged women because it is focusing more on the love story of Westley and Buttercup.

artist statement

p u r p o s e

When exploring the idea of purpose, specificity was very important. I wanted to create an image that portrayed purpose being fulfilled in simple way. The way that a cup fulfills its purpose is by holding a beverage for a person to drink. When it touches the person's lips, its purpose completed.
I also wanted to illustrate the cup's purpose going beyond what its created purpose was. It was originally created to hold a beverage of some sort, and now it holds flowers.
Both of the images are connected because the cup touches "life" in each. I highlighted the color of my lips to display the fulfillment of the cup's original purpose. In the second image, the "life", or flowers, are in color to display the cup's new purpose, not the designed purpose. The decaying petals falling from the flower illustrates that when used outside of of its designed purpose, it falls apart.

The concept of purpose is important to me because I believe that I was created for a purpose. In a cosmic sense, I know that God created me to be His hands and feet to reach out to those who are lost in this world. This concept is vast, which is why I thought it would be beneficial to demonstrate a simple meaning of purpose.

Thomas' work appeals to me because of the quiet ethereal quality his work seems to have. His work is very different, from imaginative landscapes to colorful edited people, all of it has a similar glow to it. The way he edits his work is recognizable because of the blue/green/purple family of colors glowing on the borders of the pictures or worked into the art. His big ideas seem to portray cosmic existence.  When I first saw his work, I thought of "purpose" which is my big idea for art edu. in this specific image, the girl is looking at the key to the world. I connected the idea of a higher power to this picture because she doesn't seem to be able to open it. It suggests that someone else has the key.

The way that Thomas' work is cohesive in that the nature around the world seems like it works altogether is a component i could add to my project. The color scheme is also important to be careful of because his work is all in a similar family of colors. I can use this in my project to bring it together. http://www.designyourway.net/blog/inspiration/digital-art/thomas-tibitanzl-graphic-designer/

I've blogged about Tim Walker before, but I can't seem to shy away from his work. I love that each of his photos tell a story. In particular, I really like that he is able to play around with sizing in his pictures. Tim's work is unusual because he takes regular everyday items, and puts it in a strange juxtaposition.

I think that I could incorporate this element of size in my work in order to illustrate the importance of a subject. for example, with the big idea of purpose, I could demonstrate the common purpose of people that are working. The idea of a person working a computer/machine that's way bigger than them could show that there's a bigger purpose in this life other than working.

Haha, big fish.
